Leaving the Elementary School

Whose Child is This?

Author Unknown
"Whose child is this?" I asked one day
Seeing a little one out at play
"Mine", said the parent with a tender smile
"Mine to keep a little while
To bathe his hands and comb his hair
To tell him what he is to wear
To prepare him that he may always be good
And each day do the things he should"

"Whose child is this?" I asked again
As the door opened and someone came in
"Mine", said the teacher with the same tender smile
"Mine, to keep just for a little while
To teach him how to be gentle and kind
To train and direct his dear little mind
To help him live by every rule
And get the best he can from school"

"Whose child is this?" I ask once more
Just as the little one entered the door
"Ours" said the parent and the teacher as they smiled
And each took the hand of the little child
"Ours to love and train together
Ours this blessed task forever."

C.S. Lewis Literacy on my iPhone

So I wonder here if CS is correct. Is what lies ahead in my life much greater than what I leave behind? It seems like it was yesterday that high school ended. Now college is coming to a close and the real world is staring me boldly in the face like an angry bull ready to run me over. I've reflected on the year. I've seen friends get married. I've lost people that I hold dear and somehow in all of this my childhood disappeared. And though I have lost a lot, I have gained so much too. I have knowledge about the past. I have a strong pedagogy for teaching. I know learning strategies and teaching methods, but the question is what do I do now?

Time

One thing I've learned about time is that no matter how much time I have.....it's never enough.

The first few days.....

Kayla,
“I thank my God upon every remembrance of you...” 1 Corinthians 1:4
Do you remember the first time I told you that? It was in the first note I ever wrote to you while you were in the hospital. It’s 7:24 pm July 7, 2010. You just came out of your first major surgery. You did wonderful. You had a spinal tap, bone marrow extraction, and a central line installed. you were a trooper. You are in so much pain in that hospital bed right now. James is sitting beside you, I’m on the couch, and your dad is in a chair. I keep praying that the pain will go away. I know it is only going to get harder, but I also know that El Roi (the God who looks down on me) is the same God who looks down on you. He is also the very same God who made the blind man see and made the leopard man be heal. One day you will be able to grab Bongo and walk right out of this hospital room, but until then...I’ll be here waiting, loving you, and praying.
You are strong and you are brave.

Running the Race

Stick it to Cancer Team: We raised thousands of dollars in the fight against Leukemia. The whole team ran the streets of Atlanta underneath the city lights.

Kayla not Red

There was a time when I didn't know,
My heart was un-jaded and pure,
A time before I knew the world was mean and cruel,
   My faith was unshaken;

There was a time when I didn't know about the pain and agony,
Before morphine drips and hospital doors,
A time when your days were not numbered and life was at our fingertips.

There was a time when I brought you McDonald's round chicken nuggets,
Instead of Sunflowers to  adorn your grave.

There was a time when I didn't know you....
I didn't miss you then at all.

Black coffee

My philosophy on life has always been that black coffee can fix anything...now I'm not so sure. There is pain that consumes your whole body...physically, emotionally. It's the pain from losing someone you love; whether it's death, a breakup, long distance separation...it's an all consuming pain. I am a people pleaser and I suck at it. I don't make mistakes often, but when I do. OH BOY they are huge mistakes...mistakes that make up for all the little ones that I have missed over my teenage years. I know that no one is perfect, and that I serve a faithful, loving and forgiving father. I sure am glad. Prior to the last 72 hours, I have never broken a heart before and I never thought I could. I stand corrected. I broke a heart, squeezed it, and trampled all over it. In breaking a heart, my heart is broken to the point where I shake and feel sick...constantly. So does he. Black coffee today couldn't fix the pain of thinking about his hurting heart...the disappointment I brought him. Black coffee for once wasn't enough.

Mercy

Beloved,
For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime, weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning. (1) To you, oh Lord I lift my soul. In you I trust oh God. Do not let me be put to shame nor let my enemies triumph over me. No one whose hope is in you will ever be put to shame, but they will be put to shame who are treacherous without excuse. ... For you are God my Savior and my hope is in you all day long. (2) Cause me to hear Your loving-kindness in the morning, for on You do I lean and in You do I trust. Cause me to know the way wherein I should walk, for I lift up my inner self to You. (3)Then shall I have an answer for those who taunt and reproach me, for I lean on, rely on, and trust in Your word. (4)
